City Lifestyle – A Parents’ Heart-Stopping Journey –

A Parents Heart-Stopping Journey Through Fear, Faith, and Hope: The Story of “When We Could Not See the Moon” Our daughter had been traveling the world for years, chasing adventures in distant places. We always knew she was a free spirit, unafraid to dive into new cultures, but frankly it did give our parent hearts some angst. In 2021, she decided to embrace the digital nomad lifestyle, starting with Egypt, drawn by the Red Sea.  In her travels it had become routine for us to receive a quick call or text as she boarded her flight, and again when she landed safely at her destination. That message, however, never came. On Friday before departure she texted, “Next chapter begins today!”  The next morning we expected to hear she had arrived. Initially, we thought it was just a delay or busy meeting up with her friend. But as the morning slipped into afternoon and still no word, our anxiety began to mount. By evening, that familiar knot of worry tightened, but we kept telling ourselves she’d reach out soon; she always did. By Sunday morning, there were no new messages or missed calls. Jon, appearing calm but feeling a growing fear, sent a message asking if she had arrived safely. A sinking feeling in our hearts told us that something was terribly wrong. MONDAY, FEBRUARY 22ND 12:30 a.m. Tracy The text came after midnight. As every parent knows, the midnight call or text is never the one you want to receive. But it was one I felt in my bones was coming. It started as a little nagging worry, as we hadn’t heard from Hanna when her plane had touched down. Then, it grew steadily as the hours, then days, passed by and she did not check in. Not to say she was settled into her lodging or to send a photo as she toasted with friends to celebrate the start of her yearlong adventure abroad or even to admit she was already missing home. Finally, that nagging worry had grown into the foreboding anxiety that had ensured when that midnight text did arrive, I was awake and waiting for it. The buzz of my phone across the room. The leap in my chest, cutting off my breath. The silent plea as I reached for the phone on the table—please be from Hanna. I wanted more than anything to feel that unique mixture of both relief and frustration. I wanted to finally know she was safe, and I wanted to be angry with her for not checking in sooner. But it wasn’t Hanna’s name on the screen. It was Taylor, our youngest daughter. “Can you please call me in the morning? I have some news about Hanna.” I didn’t wait until morning. I barely waited to read the whole text. It was after midnight, and sleep was not coming for me. I wouldn’t sleep at all that night. In fact, I wouldn’t sleep well for many more. This marked the beginning of a parent’s worst nightmare – our worst fear realized. This is our personal story, we are Jon and Tracy. Our world shattered when we learned that Hanna had been unjustly detained in a foreign jail. Fear gripped us, and the uncertainty of her fate felt like an endless void. We didn’t know how we would survive this ordeal, but we knew we weren’t alone. In these darkest moments, faith became our anchor. We turned to God for strength to endure the unimaginable. We asked for clarity, guidance, and our daughter’s safety. Prayer became our lifeline when everything else seemed to crumble. Our community of family, friends, and even strangers became our support system in ways we never could have imagined, lifting us up and joining in our fight. The people of Idaho and beyond—across the world, people from all walks of faith—came together, united by a common goal: to bring Hanna home. Faith is not a shield from hardship but rather a source of strength to overcome it. It gave us the courage to face the unknown, to keep fighting even when the odds seemed insurmountable. Everyday heroes emerged at every turn. We didn’t vet them; we trusted in the higher power, far beyond human comprehension, that guided our path. Romans 8:28 says, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” This verse became our mantra, reminding us we were not alone. It was the collective effort of those placed in our path that made a difference. This is the message we hope to pass along to those who read our book: that even in the most difficult circumstances, when it feels like you’re drowning, God works through those who have faith and who ask for help. But we must know to ask, and we must be willing to reach out to the stranger who might just be the one to save us. Our story is more than a true tale of fear and desperation; it is a testament to the power of faith, love, and community. It is a gripping, real-life suspense story with unfathomable twists that you might think could only happen in the movies. But it is also a story of hope, of the ways people come together in times of crisis, and of the enduring belief that we are never truly alone. Oh my God, is she even still alive?” Article by Tammy De Weerd Photography by Tammy De Weerd Originally Published in Meridian Magazine

New book documents Tammy and Jan de Weerd’s quest to free their daughter from an Egyptian jail

New book documents Tammy and Jan de Weerd’s quest to free their daughter from an Egyptian jail By Kelly Holm kholm@idahopress.com Sep 26, 2024 MERIDIAN — She went to Egypt with ambitions of seeing the Red Sea’s coral reefs. But soon, she found herself needing her own Moses to rescue her from captivity. Such was the plight of Meridian de Weerd family’s eldest daughter — called Hanna in the new book, “When We Could Not See the Moon.” She had set off in February 2021 for a planned year in the North African nation. A digital nomad, she could (and did) complete her work in marketing and web analytics with a WiFi connection from anywhere in the world. Having visited Egypt before with a former boyfriend who was from the country, she yearned to go back for a longer stay, when she could scuba dive in the Red Sea and visit its endangered coral reefs. This time, though, she didn’t even make it past customs, due to some vitamins and pancake mix. “She had a year to a year-and-a-half’s supply of supplements. When you travel, you put your supplements in baggies, and that’s what we did here at home before she first went,” said Tammy de Weerd, Hanna’s mother and Meridian’s mayor from 2004-2020. “The number of capsules she had in her suitcase caught their attention, in addition to the pancake mix. It was all out of her view, so she didn’t know what was going on. She thought she was the lucky winner of the random draw for a random search.” Instead, Hanna was detained on suspicion of drug trafficking. What followed was a lengthy ordeal for the de Weerds to prove Hanna’s innocence and get her released from a squalid Egyptian jail. Their efforts, and Hanna’s experiences on the inside, are chronicled in “When We Could Not See the Moon: A True Story of Faith,” as told to ghostwriter Savannah Spidalieri. “[For the first] four or five days, we didn’t know if she was OK. We didn’t know if she was hurt, we didn’t know if she had been violated,” said Hanna’s father, Jan de Weerd. “As a matter of fact, we don’t want to talk about that — but we didn’t know if she was alive.” All they had to go on were a few texts Hanna had sent to friends and her younger sister, Taylor, before her phone was confiscated: If you don’t hear from me in a day or two, tell my parents what happened. A friend-of-a-friend-of-a-friend of Tammy’s was able to confirm with the Egyptian embassy that, yes, an American woman was being held in their custody. Tammy Googled conditions in Egyptian jails, and was horrified to learn that Hanna would be in a 12-by-12-foot cell with up to 20 other detainees. There was only a hole in the corner for a bathroom, and a single lightbulb that remained on 24 hours a day. Hanna learned to tell time from the call to prayer, five times daily. Meanwhile, Taylor and Hanna’s friends in the Netherlands — Jan de Weerd’s native country, where Hanna and Taylor have dual citizenship — pooled funds with Hanna’s Egyptian ex-boyfriend to hire an attorney. Jan and Tammy worked around the clock to expedite the lab test results on the substances in time for Hanna’s planned court date. And Tammy began the arduous task of identifying each supplement with its manufacturer, based off of a grainy photo in an Egyptian tabloid story about the suspected “American smuggler.” “The book is written day by day from our perspective,” said Jan, “and then it flips to what happened that exact same day from Hanna’s perspective.” To protect the privacy of those involved and to give the family space in their healing, all names in “When We Could Not See the Moon” have been changed, except for Hanna’s cat. Jan and Tammy de Weerd became Jon and Tracy Willems, and though they’re promoting the book under their real names, they continue to publicly refer to their daughter as Hanna. The couple said they wanted to publish their story to demonstrate the power of faith in their lives and to encourage those facing similarly difficult situations. Spidalieri, the director of publishing at Ballast Books, had initially written just a project summary for prospective writers, but she and the de Weerds quickly realized she was the perfect ghostwriter to bring the family’s voices to life. “When we first started talking about their project, that really resonated with me as a mom. I can’t imagine my daughter being in that same situation,” Spidalieri said. “After working with Jan and Tammy for so long, they feel like family, and that’s another reason this book is so close to my heart.” Today, Taylor and Hanna both still live abroad. Hanna is reluctant to speak about what she went through, with her parents only learning the full extent of it upon reading draft chapters that Spidalieri constructed from her diaries. Net proceeds for the book, as per Hanna’s wish, will be donated to provide food and legal counsel to women in Egyptian pretrial detention. “Not everyone has family,” Tammy said. “Hanna really had a community that could step up and fight for her. … She felt guilt, because she had so much more than these women she was incarcerated with had, and she wanted to be able to repay them.” “When We Could Not See the Moon” was released Tuesday, Sept. 24. Book signings will be held at Barnes & Noble in Boise from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28, and at Hells Canyon Winery in Caldwell from noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12. Christian Living: ‘Surrounded By Fire’ –
God Meets The de Weerds In a Crisis

‘Surrounded By Fire’ – God Meets The de Weerds In a Crisis By Steve Bertel  Editor’s note: The subjects of this article, Tammy and Jan de Weerd, agreed to share their personal experiences and testimonies so that, when we face seemingly insurmountable challenges or crises in our own lives, we, too, can trust in the same unshakable faith they did – and know that God is already guiding our way through the difficult situations, even when we may not immediately see it. However, we are respecting the parents’ privacy wishes and not revealing their daughters’ real names.  Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego knew they faced impossible odds when they defied the orders of the mighty and powerful King Nebuchadnezzar. But they also knew they served a God more mighty and more powerful than any earthly ruler. Bound and cast into a fiery furnace – with the heat cranked up, on the angry King’s orders, seven times more than usual – the three men faithfully knew God was at their sides. Even when they were surrounded by the blazing hot fire. Even when it seemed there was no way out. At least no way out they could immediately see.  Until, as we read in Daniel 3:25, Nebuchadnezzar peered into the furnace and, astonished, told his counselors, “Look! I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire; and they are not hurt – and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God!” The furnace was then opened and the three men were allowed to emerge. To the amazement of the King and all his men, they were totally unscathed!” In fact, Daniel 3:27 tells us… “the hair of their head[s] was not singed, nor were their garments affected, and the smell of fire was not on them.”  Such was the faith of former Meridian mayor Tammy de Weerd and her husband, Jan.  It started in the early morning hours of Monday, February 22, 2021, when they received a text from their youngest daughter, Taylor, who was living in Amsterdam at the time. The text said only: “Can you please call me in the morning? I have some news about Hanna.” Taylor knew the time difference between Amsterdam and Idaho; it was 8 a.m. in the Netherlands – and midnight in Idaho.  But Tammy couldn’t wait. She snatched up the phone and called her daughter.  And what Taylor told her was every parent’s worst nightmare…  READ THE FULL STORY WHEN WE COULD NOT SEE THE MOON Facebook-f Contact info@wwcnstm.com Custom Site Design by Custom Site Design by Copyright © 2024 When We Could Not See The Moon | All Rights Reserved | Privacy Policy
